THE PANDEMIC

The newspapers kept publishing so we were able to get our morning briefing. The Condo Board wouldn’t let “Old Faithful” deliver the paper to the door at the crack of dawn as had been done for decades. Instead we had to go down to the concierge to pick it up from the tabletop where they were all neatly laid out. This turned out to be a blessing because it provided a reason to get up and going before breakfast. The evening television news provided our daily nightmare of statistics and all the bad that had happened across the country with a few inserts from the U.S. and elsewhere.

Our first nightmare was that we were not prepared. We only had a few masks and a handful of inhalators. I will never forget the look of frustration and fear on the part of the nurses and the other care workers. They simply didn’t have the equipment to do their jobs properly and many of them didn’t mind saying so on camera. I could imagine how they would feel going home to a family of young or old people, or both, not knowing whether or not you might have been infected by the virus as a consequence of your dedications to help others. Shivers go up and down my spine every time I think about it.

The first responders found themselves in a similar dilemma. They didn’t have the proper clothing, shields, high quality masks essential to respond to a call that was quite likely to be inflicted with the virus. It just isn’t fair. But what are the alternatives? There are none! So off they go, sirens screaming, knowing all too well that they may be putting their own lives, as well as that of their family, in jeopardy.

The nightly telecasts had their own morbid rhythm. We were bombarded with statistics, separate from the front line, specialist doctors answering question after question about the virus, how we could best avoid getting infected, should we wear masks? The answer ranged from no, to maybe, then possibly yes. Their principal advice was in respect of working. If your work isn’t essential, go home and stay home.
